Essential Oils in Pregnancy PDF  | Print |  E-mail

thumb_pregnancy1.jpgEssential Oils in Pregnancy

There is such a confusing array of information out there about using essential oils while pregnant.

In his article Toxicity Myths (published  in “Aromatherapy Journal of the NAHA” 2002)  Ron Guba* explains that many warnings are based on hearsay and are not scientifically based.  Ron explains  the good news, is that there is no essential oil,  readily available to the you, the  lay person, that is harmful in  normal dosages /usage during pregnancy. (Essential oils to be avoided during pregnancy include Pennyroyal, Wormwood,  Sage etc - these essential oils are not normally made available in Aromatherapy ranges on sale to the general public)

Based on scientific evidence the guidelines for the use of essential oils in pregnancy are as follows:

·  You can safely burn any of the readily available essential oils or blends in an oil burner or vaporiser

· Massage is very therapeutic in pregnancy and is to be encouraged.  Normal concentrations of essential oils of 2.5% for the body and 1% for the face in a base oil apply.

· Essential oil blends prepared by a qualified aromatherapy practitioner, at a dose of 10% concentration can be used to help with lower back pain etc. (Moon-Haven’s Achy Breaky is ideal for this!)

*Ron Guba is the highly respected  founder of the Centre for Aromatic Medicine (est 1989) and lectures around the world to health professionals on this subject.
