Baby Massage - The Essential Touch

baby.gifBabies thrive on touch. In fact the need for physical contact is necessary for growth and development.

Studies in orphanages and hospitals repeatedly tell us that infants deprived of skin contact lose weight, become ill and may even die. We know that premature babies given periods of touch therapy gain weight faster, cry less, and show more signs of relaxed pulse, respiration rate and muscle tension.

This all bodes well for using baby massage in your daily routine. Massaging your baby need not be a formal affair.  Bath time, nappy changes, getting ready for a nap, play time and even feeding are all great opportunities for extended touch time between babe and parent.  There are plenty of techniques out there but the basics are just the same, almost any caring touch will do - as long as it is gentle and relaxed. Of course massaging baby shouldn’t be left to mums...dads, grandparents in fact all the family should get  involved! A little oil or cream will make it easier to slide over your babes skin but is not necessary. The most important point is  ...have a go!
